It worked for Ginsu knives, why not computers?

That’s the thinking of Hauppauge, N.Y.-based Rent-A-PC, which has commissioned a series of no-frills television advertising to introduce its computer rental business to Atlanta.

The first spot created by Friedman, Ellis, Nielsen & Rogan, also of Hauppauge, spotlights the computers’ “center stage” while the soundtrack (the Spinners’ rhythm and blues classic, “I’ll Be Around”) delivers the “message.”

There is no voiceover, just an on-screen blurb: “Corporate computer rentals … daily, weekly, monthly. Call us, we’llbe around.”

Rent-A-PC has been successful keeping things simple. The company already has outlets in eight markets: Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Orlando, Fla., and Hauppauge.

Atlanta should be a pushover. Ted Turner got CNN off the ground relying on Ginsu-style advertising.

The 30-second spot breaks next month on network affiliates.
