A Vote of Confidence

Investors last week shrugged off weak employment data and the ongoing war in Iraq, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average higher at week’s end. Meanwhile, analysts expressed confidence that marketing-communications companies are getting their bottom lines in order. On the Big Board, IPG shares increased 5.7 percent to close the week at $9.90; Omnicom rose 6.1 percent to $57.67; and British holding company WPP, trading as American Depository Receipts on the Nasdaq, jumped 11.4 percent to $29.74. Media shares in the U.S. received a boost after Credit Suisse First Boston issued a report last Wednesday contending that in general, agency fundamentals are more solid than previously thought. —david kaplan
