Sean Thompson has joined Team Volvo as executive creative director and managing partner. In that capacity, he will guide all campaigns for the auto brand.
Thompson (shown) will also serve as ecd, managing partner of Arnold’s soon-to-launch Amsterdam, the Netherlands, office.
Havas-owned Arnold is a member of Team Volvo, the dedicated unit formed last month to handle the brand’s ad assignment. Havas’ Euro RSCG 4D and SapientNitro are the other Team Volvo contributors.
Since 2006, Thompson has served as creative director at 180 Amsterdam, working on BMW and Adidas, among others. Earlier in his career, he served at the London office of Wieden + Kennedy. (On Volvo, he takes over duties previously handled by Arnold cd Stephen Ward, who is leaving the agency.)
Jorian Murray left London-based Dye Holloway Murray to lead Team Volvo as global brand director.
Volvo’s U.S. spending declined during the height of the recession to $20 million last year from $50 million in ’08, per Nielsen. Spending in the first half of 2010 was $10 million.
Even so, the brand has aggressive expansion plans to be backed by an increase in promotional efforts worldwide.
The nameplate was recently acquired by Chinese auto giant Geely Corp. from U.S. firm Ford Motor Co.
