NEW YORK–Magazine veteran John Griffin will replace Robert Sims when he retires at the end of the year as president of magazine publishing for the National Geographic Society, the Washington, D.C., based organization said Thursday.

He will oversee the business side of the flagship National Geographic magazine, and editorial and business operations of spin-off titles National Geographic Traveler, National Geographic Adventure and National Geographic World.

Griffin, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Hearst Magazines International since last October and president of Rodale from 1990 to 2000, is set to start at National Geographic in September.
