Minnesota Lottery Evaluates Semifinalists

CHICAGO The Minnesota Lottery is reviewing proposals from six semifinalists in the review for its $7 million annual advertising account, according to officials with the state department.

Contending for the business are: incumbent The Foley Group in Minneapolis; independent Barkley Evergreen & Partners in Kansas City, Mo.; and Minneapolis agencies BBDO (owned by Omnicom) and Colle + McVoy (owned by MDC Partners), and independents Clarity Coverdale Fury and Initio Advertising, which is pitching with media shop Haworth Marketing and Media.

A cut to finalists is expected by the end of the month, with a decision expected in mid-August, said Dale McDonnell, general counsel for the St. Paul, Minn.-based lottery.

The Foley Group has held the account since 1999. Recent radio ads have focused on individual instant-win games and ran without a tagline.

The review comes after a state audit that determined the lottery needed a more coherent marketing plan. The lottery in February also added a new director, Mike Vekich, replacing longtime director George Anderson, who passed away.
