Michelin Review Nearing End
CHICAGO—Agencies competing for Michelin’s $35 million account will make final presentations this week. In the pitch are Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis, Campbell-Ewald in Detroit, and the Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. Incumbent DDB, New York, was cut earlier in the review. A decision could come by the end of the week.
Burnett Names Number 2 Global Creative
CHICAGO—Leo Burnett chief creative officer Michael Conrad named Miguel Angel Furones the agency’s worldwide deputy creative director. Furones will remain chairman of Vitruvio/Leo Burnett in Spain.
IPG, TN Close Deal
CHICAGO—The Interpublic Group of Cos. completed its acquisition of True North Communications last week following approval from TN shareholders and the European Union. The deal had a value of $1.6 billion at Friday’s closing IPG stock price. TN’s stock listing has been terminated with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
AT&T Cuts Fallon, 3 Continue in Review
SAN FRANCISCO—Fallon Minneapolis was cut from the $400 million AT&T Wireless review, a representative for the client said. AT&T Wireless representative James Peterson said a winner could be decided in a meeting of the review committee scheduled for June 29. The three finalists are FCB, TBWA\Chiat\Day and Ogilvy & Mather, all in New York. The cut left Fallon executives considering layoffs, according to an agency official.
Motorola Media Contenders Still Waiting
CHICAGO—Contenders in financially troubled Motorola’s $150 million media review aren’t sure what’s going on seven months after the Schaumburg, Ill.-based company sent out proposal requests. The contenders are incumbent Universal McCann and Mindshare, both in New York, and Initiative Media, Los Angeles. In July, when the maker of electronics and communications equipment placed the creative portion of its account with Ogilvy & Mather, the decision was made to review Motorola’s media buying and planning. Proposal requests were sent in December. Motorola executives could not be reached for comment.
Nine Vying for Indiana Anti-Tobacco Work
CHICAGO—The State of Indiana is evaluating nine agencies hoping to handle a $7 million anti-tobacco campaign. The agencies are: Asher Agency, Fort Wayne, Ind.; BBDO Minneapolis; LAO Advertising, Cincinnati; MSI Advertising, Richmond, Va.; and Indianapolis agencies GCI Group, Montgomery Zukerman Davis, Publicis, Shank and Young & Laramore, according to an official with the state’s procurement division, which is running the review. The one-year contract may be renewed for up to three years.
More Layoffs at Tatham
CHICAGO—Euro RSCG McConnaughy Tatham laid off 12 workers last week, citing lowered spending by clients and the recent loss of its $50 million Midas account. The cutbacks represent slightly less than 5 percent of the agency’s staff, a representative said.
