Kohler Assigns Creative to GSD&M

DALLAS—Kohler has awarded the $15 million creative portion of its account to GSD&M. The Wisconsin-based maker of kitchen and bath fixtures selected the Austin, Texas, agency following a review which included New York shops Frierson Mee + Partners and Merkley Newman Harty. Neither the client nor the agency could be reached for comment at press time. An industry source said GSD&M is finalizing its contract with Kohler, which will include print and television duties. Starcom USA in Chicago acquired the client’s media buying last year.

Dr Pepper Makes Super Bowl Lineup

DALLAS—Shift, a four-person urban marketing unit of The Richards Group, ran a spot for Dr Pepper during the Super Bowl pregame show featuring Laila Ali, daughter of former boxing champion Muhammad Ali. In an 11th-hour purchase, the Plano, Texas-based soft drink maker secured a 30-second slot last Friday for an undisclosed amount. The television commercial, which debuted earlier this month, is titled “Never Settle” and shows the aspiring young boxer in training. Shift of Dallas was drafted by Dr Pepper in 1998 to target the African-American market. Other clients of Richards that advertised during the game were funds manager Invesco and Motel 6.

DDB Launches Varilux Television Campaign

DALLAS—Taking a poke at the rebellious past of aging baby boomers, optical lens maker Varilux last week introduced an estimated $10 million television campaign showing middle-age, far-sighted agitators protesting at a large-print bookstore. Four spots, beginning with one showing the bespectacled protesters being hauled away by police, broke during last Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards broadcast. The ads featuring the “Presbyopic Six” will continue to air during prime-time network and cable programming over a seven-month period. The consumer-targeted ads are the first for the Dallas-based client from its new agency, DDB Worldwide/Dallas.

Promise Keepers Names Oklahoma Agency

DALLAS—Visual Image Advertising has been selected by Promise Keepers, a Christian men’s organization, to handle media and creative duties on its seven-figure account. The client, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colo., had previously used several agencies to handle the promotion of its ministry, which includes stadium conferences; radio programming; Internet, print and multi-media resources; and outreach to local churches. Visual Image is located in Oklahoma City.

Palm Harbor Chooses MQ&C Advertising

DALLAS—Palm Harbor Homes, a manufacturer of prefabricated houses, has selected MQ&C Advertising &Marketing to handle media placement for its national advertising account. The Addison, Texas, company sells its structures under brand names such as Palm Harbor, River Bend and Windsor Homes through more than 135 company-owned superstores and 300 independent retailers across the U.S. The client maintains 15 manufacturing plants and also operates financing and insurance subsidiaries. MQ&C is located in Austin, Texas.
