GSD&M, Dieste Strike Gold at Effie Awards
DALLAS–Dieste & Partners here and GSD&M, Austin, Texas, each earned gold Effie awards in the annual competition sponsored by the New York chapter of the American Marketing Association. BBDO, New York, earned the Grand Effie for its Snickers campaign for M&M/Mars. Dieste won a gold in the non-English category for a Doritos campaign for Frito-Lay and a silver in the same division for Pepsi-Cola. GSD&M earned a real estate gold for its Fannie Mae Foundation work.

Temerlin Breaks Cable TV, Print Campaign
DALLAS–Temerlin McClain, Irving, Texas, last week broke a 30-second spot for Nationwide Enterprise Insurance, Columbus, Ohio. The ad, airing on cable TV, promotes Nationwide Financial Services’ Best of America retirement savings products. Spending for the campaign, which also includes print ads in financial trade publications, is $3 million for the remainder of the year.

Darling Exits BRSG for Houston’s Brainpower
DALLAS–Bart Darling, vice president and associate creative director at Black Rogers Sullivan Goodnight in Houston, has left the agency to join Brainpower, a marketing communications firm in Houston. Darling had worked primarily on the Shell Chemical account at BRSG. Most of that business shifted in March to The Focus Agency, Dallas, and sister Omnicom agency Maher Bird Associates of London.

Cellular South Reviews 4 Finalists
ATLANTA–Four undisclosed agencies are in the finals for the $1.5-million ad account of Cellular South, a wireless communications firm in Jackson, Miss. The client said the finalists are located in Atlanta, Dallas and Memphis, Tenn. The account had been with Atlanta’s Fricks/Firestone, which won the business last summer. Agency president John Fricks said the breakup involved creative differences. The shop will continue working on the account through mid-August, when its contract expires.

FootAction Airs Spot From DDB Needham
DALLAS–Shoe and sports apparel retailer FootAction USA this week launches a 30-second TV spot on network and national cable programs featuring Lawrence Johnson, a two-time NCAA indoor and outdoor pole vaulting champion. In the ad, Johnson says that sprinters get more attention, but “deep down, they’re just pole vaulters who are scared of heights.” DDB Needham Dallas created the ad for the Irving, Texas-based client.

Gleason Calise Gains MADD Assignment
DALLAS–Gleason Calise Associates here was tapped to handle pro bono efforts for a new CD-ROM product offered by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Irving, Texas. The CD, called “The Key,” will be used by parents in communicating with children about safe driving and the dangers of underage drinking. GCA will provide creative and media placement services.
