Ogilvy Set to Win $100 Mil. Novartis Media Account

NEW YORK–Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide is expected to win the consolidated media buying assignment for Novartis Consumer Health, a unit of Novartis AG. The Summit, N.J-based company was formed last year following the merger of Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz. Eric Jackson, an executive at Novartis Consumer Health, confirmed the company is holding two separate agency reviews to consolidate media buying and creative duties, but he said no decisions have yet been reached. Eight roster agencies, which worked with either Ciba or Sandoz, including New York shops Grey Advertising, Publicis/Bloom and Jordan, McGrath, Case & Taylor, are competing for the consolidated creative assignment. The company, which markets such brands as Maalox and Theraflu, spends more than $100 million on advertising annually, said Jackson.

Pepsi Shops International Promo Assignment

DALLAS–Pepsi-Cola’s international division has issued a request for proposal seeking an agency to handle a large promotional assignment in 1998. Sources said that move could lead to a consolidation internationally of its promotional efforts at one agency, similar to the way the company relies mainly on TLPartnership in Dallas to develop its domestic promotions. TLP will likely be considered, as will other roster shops, said sources. Presentations are scheduled for mid-May. Jorge Consuegra, senior manager of promotions for Pepsi’s international division, is said to be assisting in the review. He could not be reached at press time.

Angotti, Thomas, Hedge Lands RCN Account

NEW YORK–RCN, a Princeton, N.J.-based cable, telephone and Internet provider, has awarded its estimated $10 million ad account to Angotti, Thomas, Hedge here. The shop bested finalist Hill, Holliday/Altschiller here for the business, said Kenneth Walker, the consultant who handled the review. ‘We’re already back in the telecommunications business with a client that’s extremely well funded, very entrepreneurial and wants to do breakthrough, award- winning creative,’ said agency principal Barrie Hedge. His shop split with PCS PrimeCo in February.

Umbro Seeks Agency for $5-6 Mil. Account

BOSTON–Soccer apparel company Umbro International in Greenville, S.C., is seeking an agency to handle its estimated $5-6 million ad account, the company confirmed last week. Goodby, Silverstein & Partners resigned the business last month after winning a conflicting Nike assignment.

Ikea Consolidates N. American Ad Duties at Deutsch

NEW YORK–Ikea Home Furnishings, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., has tapped Deutsch here to handle its consolidated $40 million North American ad account. Deutsch, which handles creative and media planning and buying in the U.S., won creative duties in Canada from Roche Macaulay & Partners Advertising and Ammirati Puris Lintas, both in Toronto, according to Ikea’s North American ad manager Sara Loos. The agency may open up a field office in Canada.
