MasterCard Presentations Are Under Way
DALLAS–MasterCard International has heard presentations from two of the five contenders for the creative portion of its $85-90 million account. GSD&M, Austin, Texas, presented last week, following an earlier presentation by Messner Vetere Berger McNamee Schmetterer/Euro RSCG, New York. The remaining contenders–Grey Advertising and McCann-Erickson, both New York, and Leo Burnett, Chicago–are scheduled to present next week. Extensive consumer testing of spec creative will follow, according to insiders, with a decision expected in December.
Continental Airlines to Begin Agency Meetings
DALLAS–Houston-based Continental Airlines has scheduled credentials presentations for its consolidated $50 million advertising account with the seven agencies that returned an initial questionnaire last month, sources said. Set to make presentations over the next three weeks are: TBWA Chiat/Day, Grey Advertising, J. Walter Thompson, Ammirati Puris Lintas, Ogilvy & Mather and N.W. Ayer & Partners, all New York, and Campbell-Ewald, Warren, Mich. Shops moving past the credentials round will be asked to make creative and/or strategic recommendations, sources said, with a decision expected later this summer. The Richards Group, Dallas, which handles Continental’s $30 million U.S. ad account, is defending its business.
4 Hispanic Shops Emerge in Humana Search
ATLANTA–Humana late last month heard presentations from Miami’s Accentmarketing, del Rivero Messianu, IAC Advertising Group and an undetermined South Florida agency, along with Lopez Negrete Communications in Houston, sources said. Executives from those shops either declined comment or denied being in the pitch. The five are reportedly pursuing the managed care firm’s $1-2 million Hispanic account. An agency had not been selected at press time.
Lamar Outdoor Completes Acquisition
DALLAS–Lamar Advertising Co., Baton Rouge, La., has completed the purchase of Headrick Outdoor for $76.6 million. The deal will provide Lamar with an additional 3,600 bulletin displays in 10 states, including Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
Strascina Retains New Mexico Business
DALLAS–Strascina & Partners in Albuquerque, N.M., successfully defended its account with the New Mexico Economic Development Department, based in Santa Fe, N.M. The only other contender was Hayduk-King, Santa Fe. Although billings are to be determined in contract negotiations, the state has budgeted up to $450,000 for marketing.

BBDO South, Atlanta, declined to pitch capabilities for AlphaGraphics, Tucson, Ariz., after being considered for the business.
