Gates Sells 100,000 Univision Shares

NEW YORK The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation sold 100,000 shares of Univision Communications Inc. Class A common stock on Dec. 18, according to a U.S. regulatory filing on Friday.

The foundation said it sold its remaining stake in Univision, which is in the process of being acquired by private investors, for an average of $35.34 per share in open-market transactions.

In May, Gates’ Cascade Investment, a private investment entity, had joined Mexico’s Grupo Televisa and other equity firms in a failed bid to buy Univision.

The transaction was disclosed in a filing made with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Univision currently is finalizing its buyout to a consortium that includes Madison Dearborn Partners Inc., Providence Equity Partners, Texas Pacific Group, Thomas H. Lee Partners and billionaire Haim Saban’s Saban Capital Group.

The deal is expected to be completed by March.
