DeVito/Verdi, Bozell Win Best of Show Addys

LOS ANGELES DeVito/Verdi and Bozell will receive best of show honors on June 7 at the American Advertising Federation’s annual Addy Awards, the organization said.

The Addy best of show broadcast award will go to DeVito/Verdi in New York for its National Thoroughbred Racing Association radio campaign. The effort’s “Dinner Date,” “Guy’s Night Out” and “Mall” spots describe each of these events in the style of a sports announcer reporting a horse’s progress around a track. A radio commercial has rarely captured the top Addy Award, the AAF said.

The Addy best of show print honor will be presented to Bozell in New York for a New York Times campaign tagged “Look deeper.” The series includes the “Play Card,” “Flag,” “Guggenheim” and “Burka” ads. The executions show a photo of each item, with the corner appearing to peel up, revealing four words describing different perspectives on the images.

GSD&M in Austin, Texas, and Leo Burnett in Chicago will be recognized with the most Addy Awards overall. GSD&M will receive eight gold and 13 silver, while Leo Burnett will get six gold and 15 silver. Other top winners are Venables, Bell & Partners in San Francisco with 12 awards, including four gold and eight silver; Rogers Townsend in St. Louis with 11 awards, including one gold and 10 silver; davidandgoliath in Los Angeles with 11 awards, including three gold and eight silver; and BBDO in New York with nine awards, including seven gold and two silver.

In the inaugural worldwide Addy competition, awards will go to Armando Testa of Torino, Italy; Latitudes of the Republic of Georgia; and Dentsu Taiwan of Taipei, Taiwan.

Sixty thousand entries were judged during regional Addy competitions around the country; 1,764 advanced to be evaluated nationally by a jury chaired by Stephen Rogers, president and CEO of Chess Communications Group in Baltimore. The result: 126 gold Addys and 200 silver Addys. The 1,764 entries represent a 9 percent increase from last year’s judging, according to the AAF.

The awards will be presented during the AAF National Conference at the Century Plaza Hotel & Spa in Los Angeles.
