Deutsch Opens in Boston Digs

Two Former Arnold Executives Anchor New Full-Service Office
BOSTON–Deutsch is coming to Boston. The largest independent U.S. agency, led by the hard-charging Donny Deutsch, plans to open its third full-service office here.
The outpost will be managed by Kathy Kiely and Kristin Volk, both former executives at Arnold Communications.
Kiely, a creative director who left Arnold in June after a stint in new business, will be evp and general manager. Volk, who helped build Arnold’s account-planning capability and was instrumental in its rapid ascent to the $1 billion mark in billings, will be evp and director of strategic planning.
Deutsch Boston’s aim: to hit $300 million in billings in three years, replicating Deutsch’s success in Los Angeles, its only other full-service office, opened four years ago.
Deutsch said he did not plan on having a Boston presence until he came across Kiely and Volk, whom he describes as “a pair of great athletes.”
He added: “They have a tremendous new business track record, combined with the power and strength of Deutsch.”
Volk, who joined Arnold in 1986 and resigned last week, said she leaves “at the top of my game for an opportunity that was too good to pass up.”
The Boston office will at first draw on the resources of New York and CEO Deutsch will be involved “when and where necessary. These guys will call all the shots,” he said. They also have been given equity in the Boston operation, he added.
Kiely, who described herself as a heat-seeking missile when she moved from the creative department into a new-business role at Arnold, has never shied away from the rigors of building business. “She’s a grown- up with exceptional presentation skills,” Arnold chief marketing officer Fran Kelly once said of her.
Details, such as staff and location, are being hammered out but within weeks, the Deutsch Boston office should be up and running, with a staff of about 12. “Our game plan is to be part of the community,” Deutsch said. K
