Creative Duo Exits Vermont Shop To Open Own Low-Cost Agency

Creative director Ken Millman and art director Jon Shenton have left The Hayes Group in Williston, Vt., and set up their own agency, Spike Advertising.
Millman, who was a creative director and copywriter at The Hayes Group for slightly less than a year, recently teamed with Shenton to develop the shop’s TV campaign for Winslow’s Gourmet Coffee.
Matt Hayes, president and chief executive of the 15-person Hayes Group, said both Millman and Shenton have noncompete and nonsolicitation agreements with the shop. “He wanted to do TV exclusively,” Hayes said of Millman’s departure. “He was an assistant to me [on] TV for Winslow’s. Once done, he left.” Hayes also said creative work for Winslow’s is finished for at least the next year, so there is no immediate need to replace the duo.
Spike Advertising intends to offer full-service capabilities. To that end, Millman has forged alliances with media buying and research firm Carat ICG in Los Angeles and Turnstyles, a public relations shop in Boston. Offering clients services at low prices–for example, the startup won’t mark up production costs–will be a key point of differentiation from their competitors, Millman said.
