Boxer, Gymnast Perform Chili’s Jingle

DALLAS Chili’s Bar & Grill is breaking a campaign featuring former heavyweight boxing champ Evander Holyfield, gymnast Dominique Dawes and the “Baby-Back Ribs” theme song that debuted in the mid-1980s.

The commercials, developed by GSD&M of Austin, Texas, will appear in both 30- and 15-second versions.

In one ad, Holyfield intones the theme song during a gym workout. Dawes performs the tune, along with a balance-beam routine, in the other spot. The gym scenes are intercut with visuals of Chili’s Baby-Back Ribs sizzling over open flames.

Variations of the “Baby-Back Ribs” theme have been used in previous TV and radio commercials. N Sync harmonized for Chili’s ribs in a 2001 ad campaign. Two years earlier, comic actor Mike Myers borrowed the jingle in an Austin Powers scene.

Campaign spending is undisclosed.

The Chili’s chain is part of Dallas-based Brinker International, which also operates Romano’s Macaroni Grill, Maggiano’s Little Italy, On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, Big Bowl Asian Kitchen, Corner Bakery Cafe and Rockfish Seafood Grill.
