Barnes & Noble Contacts Agencies

NEW YORK Barnes & Noble has reached out to at least 15 small and midsize New York shops regarding its estimated $10-12 million account, sources said.

The bookseller has issued questionnaires and expects to make a cut by the end of February, with presentations to follow in March, according to sources.

Susan Friedman of Susan Friedman Ltd., the New York consultancy managing the review, confirmed, “A process is in place.” The New York-based client did not immediately return calls.

Most recently, B&N’s advertising has been handled in-house. Before that, the account was at Digitas in Boston.

Media spending behind the brand has declined significantly over the years. For the first 10 months of 2002, B&N spent $3 million in measured media, a fifth of what it spent in 2000 and less than half of what it spent in 2001, according to CMR.
