Arnold’s in Shipshape

Arnold Communications keeps coming out on top. As the shop prepared last Thursday to shove off for the annual Hatch awards, where it would collect most of the top prizes, in came its newest client: Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, according to sources.
The Boston-based agency won the estimated $33 million account over Temerlin McClain in Dallas and incumbent McKinney & Silver in Raleigh, N.C.
Agency officials would not comment. Michelle Smith, a representative at the Miami-based client, also declined.
Just two weeks ago, Arnold beat out another Dallas shop, The Richards Group, to capture the first national anti-smoking contract from the American Legacy Foundation, an assignment valued at $150-225 million.
Both wins combined will increase Arnold’s billings by nearly a third and are expected to create dozens of new jobs in various divisions.
Arnold sources intimated that the Royal Caribbean assignment was “fully integrated,” raising questions about the outcome of a $10 million direct marketing review that in late August was narrowed to finalists McKinney & Silver; Rapp Collins in Irving, Texas; and OgilvyOne and FCB Direct, both in New York.
A separate review is also being conducted by Royal Caribbean-owned Celebrity Cruises, which adds three ships to its line this year and earlier this summer split with its agency, Harris Drury Cohen in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In addition to Atlanta’s WestWayne, that field includes Ogilvy & Mather, Bozell and Saatchi & Saatchi, all in New York. Those shops are scheduled to make presentations to client executives this week.
