The Gillette Co., Boston, broke a $40 million campaign from BBDO New York recently, bringing its various women’s shaving products under the Gillette for women banner. North American and European efforts include TV and print advertising, promotional materials and point-of-purchase items. Forty-five and 30-second spots carry the tagline, “Gillette for women. Are you ready?” They depict active, bare-legged women perching in trees, jumping on beds and shaving with various Gillette products. North American spending is $16 million, with $11 million allocated for television and $5 million for print. BBDO launched the first Sensor for Women razor campaign in 1992.
Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco, won 10 awards at the 22nd annual One Show ceremony in New York on May 7. The shop was honored for work for Nike, Anheuser-Busch, California Fluid Milk Processors and Porsche. BMP DDB, London, took home the second-highest amount with seven, including the best of show award for its 30-second Volkswagen Polo spot. Loeffler Ketchum Mountjoy, Charlotte, N.C., won four awards, two gold pencils and two silver pencils. For the first time in the One Show College Competition, one school, Virginia Commonwealth University Ad Center, swept the awards, winning a gold, silver and bronze pencil.
Korey Kay & Partners, New York, has been officially tapped to handle creative and media duties on the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority’s $10 million ad account for the next three years [Adweek, April 13]. The MTA board approved the contract renewal April 29, making Korey Kay the first agency to win the business for three consecutive terms. The shop has handled the MTA since 1992.
Jordache Enterprises has chosen Select Communications, New York, to handle creative and media for its children’s and juniors lines. Advertising had been handled in-house and on a project basis by several agencies. Billings are estimated at $10 million. The shop won the account following a review.
DDB Needham has established the Bill Bernbach Minority Scholarship Fund, an initative designed to help talented minority students seeking a creative or portfolio education. The shop launched the fund during last week’s Clio awards with a $60,000 gift.
Holland Advertising, New York, has been hired to handle advertising for Soho-based Sharon’s Sorbet following a review that included GFS/Levinson Group, Transfusion and Blum/Herbstreith, all New York. Billings were undisclosed.
Culver Associates, New York, has added the Switzerland Board of Tourism to its client roster.
OgilvyOne, New York, the direct marketing subsidiary of Ogilvy & Mather, has won the U.S. direct marketing and advertising account for Royal Mail U.S. The business-to-business assignment involves strengthening Royal Mail U.S.’s position among its target audience of international mailers.
Eric Mower & Associates, Syracuse, won three awards at the annual NORI Awards recently. The NORIs, sponsored by the Ad Club of the Capital Region, honor overall excellence in advertising and marketing. Mower won awards for two efforts for client Garden Way: a 60-second radio spot for Troy-Built snowthrowers and the design of Garden Way’s corporate logo. The shop also won an award for a promotional poster for the ad club.
Toolbox, New York, has won MDNY Healthcare’s $2 million account, the agency reported. MDNY is a doctor-owned and managed healthcare plan operating in New York state. The plan’s network includes 3,200 participating doctors and more than 40,000 members.
Screenvision Cinema Network, New York, U.S. sponsor for the Cannes International Advertising Festival, and Judy Wald Partners, co-sponsor of the Young Creative Competition, have reported the winners of a national creative shootout involving more than 75 teams. Joan Shealy and Bobby Appleby of Fallon McElligott, Minneapolis, were selected to represent the U.S. in a Young Creative Competition at the Cannes festival, which involves 25 countries. The competition is set for Tuesday, June 23.
TKO Visual Communications, New York, has developed a new national ad campaign to promote an adoption effort by the ASPCA. The society and The Greyhound Project have a created an outdoor promotional campaign to run in 55 airports nationwide. TKO developed a visual display, measuring 60 inches wide by 40 inches high, featuring photos of dogs from the Celebrating Greyhounds calendar. The copy reads, “Make a friend for life adopt a greyhound.” The copy also includes two toll-free phone numbers and a Web address.
Comedian Rita Rudner will host the 30th annual Effie Awards, set for June 3 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel, New York.
NBC Television has renewed its contract with Horizon Media for media buying and in-market local promotions throughout the U.S. The renewed, multi-year contract will be managed from Horizon’s New York office.
Gillespie, Princeton, N.J., was tapped to handle creative and media duties for real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield’s $3 million account following a review involving five other undisclosed shops. A new campaign is expected in the fall.
Kerwin Communications, West Caldwell, has won the advertising business of professional basketball’s New Jersey Nets. The shop has also taken on the business of Gorl & Zucci, a global gold company. The shop will be responsible for all of Gorl & Zucci’s U.S. consumer advertising.
Baseball’s Houston Astros have selected Integrated Sports International, East Rutherford, to manage the team’s new business development efforts in sponsorship, sales, marketing and strategic communications.
Tierney & Partners, Philadelphia, has broken new work for the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp. The TV spots continue Philadelphia tourism’s tagline, “The city that loves you back,” and again feature prominent celebrities. Unlike last year’s inaugural work, which featured Philadelphia residents such as basketball legend Julius Erving, comedian Bill Cosby and actor Kevin Bacon talking about their home town, these ads feature frequent visitors to the city. In one spot, talk show host Oprah Winfrey tells of her love for jogging in Fairmount Park and touring the nearby Brandywine Valley. In another, former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole discusses the history of Valley Forge National Park. The ads broke in the New York area on May 4.
