Stronger-than-expected economic data boosted the Dow Jones Industrial Average at week’s end, lifting with it shares in the marketing-communications industry. On the Big Board, Interpublic Group rose 1.9 percent to close the week at $12.87; Omnicom Group climbed 2.1 percent to $60.30; and British holding company WPP Group, trading as American Depository Receipts on the Nasdaq, jumped 4.3 percent to $35.61. On Friday, Merrill Lynch issued an optimistic forecast on the ad industry’s prospects, saying a recovery is under way, based on recent media expenditures. The brokerage, however, tempered that bullish outlook with questions about the spectre of war in Iraq—a concern overshadowing the financial markets in general last week.
