2022’s Top Emmy Nominees and Where to Stream Them

By Bill Bradley

The Emmys are back, and the nominees are likely streaming on a platform near you.

The 74th Emmy Awards nominations were unveiled Tuesday morning, and streamers once again dominated.

With declining linear ratings and increasing OTT investment from media companies, the trend makes sense. After all, streaming is increasingly drawing viewers in record-breaking droves. For instance, Stranger Things has had three of Nielsen’s top five streaming weeks ever, and Squid Game pulled in 1.65 billion hours watched in 28 days following its premiere last fall.

And with those increased eyeballs come advertising opportunities. Ad dollars are already drastically shifting to streaming, with Peacock recently earning double its investment in upfronts for NBCUniversal, Disney+’s ad-supported tier set to roll out later this year, and Netflix announcing it’s getting into advertising in an accelerated timeline to combat subscriber woes.

In terms of the nominees, HBO/HBO Max cleaned up, earning the most individual show nominations for Succession with 25. The company scored 140 nominations overall and 92 noms just between Succession, The White Lotus, Hacks, Barry and Euphoria.

In other non-surprises, Ted Lasso earned 20 of Apple TV+’s 51 total nominations, and Only Murders in the Building got 17 of Hulu’s total of 58.

Netflix also did well, with Squid Game, Ozark and Stranger Things combining for a solid 40 nominations of the streamer’s 105.

But given the record number of submissions for the 2022 Emmys, there were inevitably several snubs. A growing online campaign for Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink didn’t result in a nomination, and costar Millie Bobby Brown was also passed over. Additionally, while Steve Martin and Martin Short were honored for Only Murders in the Building, co-star Selena Gomez did not receive an acting nomination.

Though Hulu did well in the comedy nominations with The Great, which has two seasons on the streamer, and Only Murders in the Building, which is in its second season, Gomez’s snub stands out. The 29-year-old series executive producer is the only member of the show’s leading trio not to get the individual acting nod. If the show focuses on other crimes after recently being renewed for a third season, it could start with Gomez getting robbed.

With 171 drama series on the Emmys ballot, snubs were inevitable. Paramount+’s hit Yellowstone, which has evolved into a whole Yellowstone Cinematic Universe thanks to co-creator Taylor Sheridan, came up wanting in terms of nominations. Not even the show’s lead actor Kevin Costner got a nod.

This Is Us was also all but forgotten in its final season, with only a nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics and not so much as a consolation Crockpot.

Sorry to all potential nominees, the limited series categories belonged to The White Lotus. From the deluge of nominees for the HBO series, which is actually coming back for another season, it seems the show was the only program eligible. All six episodes of The White Lotus Season 1 are streaming on HBO Max if you want to find out why.

The Emmys air on NBC and Peacock on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. See the full list of nominees here.
