A man surrendered to police after he barricaded himself inside the lobby of Kalamazoo, Mich., station WWMT on Thursday.
The man entered the lobby of the CBS affiliate on Thursday, saying he had a bomb. No one was hurt in the standoff with police that lasted for nearly two hours.
WWMT chief engineer George Markle made first contact with the suspect who forced his way through the first door of the station. Markle said he quickly locked the second door and barricaded the suspect inside the lobby and then got everyone out of the building.
“Many of these instances are happening in churches and schools and unfortunately today, we are one of those victims,” said WWMT general manager Fred Corbus.
The suspect surrendered to police after officers brought him food to eat.
The 36-year-old suspect is from Greenville and has a history of mental illness, according to police.
Authorities confirmed the object was not an explosive.
