Andrea Mitchell, who’s in her 42nd year as an NBC News journalist, andwill be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 40th annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards later this year in honor of her extraordinary career.
“Andrea Mitchell’s groundbreaking career has earned the respect of journalists around the world who aspire to match her standard of excellence,” Adam Sharp, president and CEO of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, said in a statement. “She is an icon.”
NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and host of MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports will be presented with the honor at New York’s Lincoln Center on Sept. 24, two days after the Primetime Emmys.
NBC’s Geoff Bennett, subbing for Craig Melvin in MSNBC’s 11 a.m. hour, announced the news before throwing to Mitchell, the network’s 12 p.m. host.
Before we hand it over to Andrea, I want to congratulate her on receiving a lifetime achievement Emmy award. Her groundbreaking career has earned the respect of journalists around the world who aspire to match her standard of excellence. She is an icon. She’ll be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Emmy award in September. Congratulations, Andrea, from all of us who are lucky enough to call you a friend and mentor.
Mitchell responded, before taking over: “Geoff, thank you so much. What a lifetime it is and more to come. Thank you very much. We are honored.”

Paula S. Apsell, senior ep of PBS’ NOVA, won the 2018 NATAS’ Lifetime Achievement Award. The award’s previous recipients include Ted Turner, Larry King, Barbara Walters and Ted Koppel.
Mitchell, honored by us earlier this year as one of the 30 most influential TV newsers of the past 30 years, has reported on many noteworthy domestic and foreign events of the last five decades, such as the run-up to the Iraq war, the evolving U.S.-Cuban relationship, and the last three U.S. presidential elections. She led NBC News’ coverage of Hillary Clinton‘s second presidential bid.
In her role as foreign affairs correspondent, Mitchell has reported dispatches from North Korea, Afghanistan, the Middle East, Bosnia, Kosovo, Pakistan and Haiti.
Mitchell earned the Freedom of the Press Award from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press earlier this year, and she was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Washington Women in Journalism Awards in April.
