Stranger Things 4 Cannot Defeat Squid Game in Ratings

The final viewing data is in, and Stranger Things 4 falls short to Netflix’s most watched series, Squid Game.

Since the release of Stranger Things 4 Vol. 1 and 2, the supernatural series has racked up 1.35 billion hours viewed within its first 28 days of release and has remained on the Netflix Top 10 list for 10 consecutive weeks. Stranger Things 4 also made history as the most watched English-language program on Netflix, beating out popular shows like Bridgerton, and even crashed Netflix as viewers logged in to watch the Season 4 finale, as reported by Bloomberg News.

Even with such impressive stats, Stranger Things 4 could not shake Squid Game’s current reign as the most watched title on Netflix. The South Korean survival series premiered on Netflix in Sept. 2021. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game stars Lee Jung-Jae as a divorced father with massive gambling debt who enters a competition with a series of deadly children’s games to win the equivalent of $38 million. The series became a global phenomenon, pulling in over 1.65 billion viewing hours within its first four weeks. Netflix recently confirmed a Season 2 renewal and a reality competition show based on the series.

Squid Game also made Emmy-award history as the first non-English series to be nominated for Outstanding Drama Series.
