Toni Morrison has written a new essay for The New Yorker called “Making America White Again.” In this piece, the Nobel Laureate offered her thoughts on the current sociopolitical climate of the Untied States. Here’s an excerpt:
“So scary are the consequences of a collapse of white privilege that many Americans have flocked to a political platform that supports and translates violence against the defenseless as strength. These people are not so much angry as terrified, with the kind of terror that makes knees tremble.”
Since the results of the election were announced, a number of writers and celebrities have shared their reactions. Jennifer Lawrence, an Oscar-winning actress, crafted an essay for Vice’s Broadly called “Don’t Be Afraid, Be Loud.” Both Virginia Heffernan, a journalist, and Lena Dunham, a Clinton supporter and filmmaker, wrote pieces for Lenny Letter readers. Within the literary community, George R.R. Martin, Grace Lin, Maggie Stiefvater, and Barry Lyga wrote blog posts about this subject. John Green shot a video for the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel to reveal his “post-election thoughts.” How do you feel about the outcome of the recent presidential race?
