BBC’s Martin Bashir Used ‘Deceitful’ Methods to Secure Princess Diana Interview, Report Finds

The BBC has apologized after an investigation concluded that journalist Martin Bashir used “deceitful behavior” to secure a landmark interview with Diana, Princess of Wales. (NBC News)

Former Supreme Court judge Lord Dyson concluded Thursday that Bashir, the former MSNBC anchor, used forged bank statements to secure access to the Princess of Wales in 1995 and that the BBC was “woefully ineffective” in getting to the bottom of his wrongdoing at the time. (Deadline)

As well as Diana’s sons, the BBC has also written apologies to Prince Charles and Diana’s brother Earl Spencer. It is also returning all awards the interview received, including a TV Bafta won in 1996. (BBC News)

Princes William and Harry slammed the BBC, saying the corporation’s failures contributed to the fear she felt in her final years and was part of a “culture of exploitation and unethical practices that ultimately took her life.” (The Guardian)
