WDIV Photogs Look for Support in Contract with Graham Media

By Kevin Eck

The IATSE union photographers at Detroit NBC station WDIV have sent out a link to a web page looking for support in its contract negotiations with station owner Graham Media Group.

According to the union representing the photogs, the photojournalists haven’t seen a wage increase since the summer of 2022, and the current contract offers wage increases 18 months after the contract begins, which the union points out is well into 2025.

Local 4-WDIV is owned by the Graham Media Corporation which earned over $348 million in the first nine months of 2023. Even with trends down in advertising, the corporation made $109 million dollars after expenses in the first nine months of 2023, making it one of the most successful subsidiaries in the parent company’s multifaceted business. With a contentious political election driving advertising and potential revenue from NFL playoffs, WDIV will continue its position as Graham’s “flagship broadcast station” throughout 2024.

The union is looking for folks to click on a pre-written email to send to GMG ceo Catharine Badalamente that says in part, “WDIV owned Graham media reported a profit of $109 million dollars last year, yet photojournalists were only offered a wage increase 18 months into the future after their contract is signed. WDIV IATSE Photojournalists deserve a living wage and a fair contract NOW!”

We asked Graham Media about it, but haven’t heard back.
