Sports-Less Spring Prompts Texas Anchor’s Switch to News

By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

Sports anchor Don Brubaker started dabbling in news coverage right before live sports came to a standstill. Now, his new position is becoming permanent.

Brubaker, who’s a sports legend at KAVU in Victoria, Texas, is now becoming the permanent 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. news anchor at the station.

“Back in March, our news director, James Munoz, asked if I would be interested in switching from sports to news anchor,” Brubaker said. “I was honored to be asked. We tried it and with a lot of help from our great news team, it turned out well. Then the pandemic hit, and sports events got canceled. The news anchoring continued, and the response from viewers has been fantastic. I can’t thank you enough for that. I am now making a permanent transition from sports to news anchoring, and I look forward to that, especially in an election year.”

Brubaker started covering sports at the station in 1984, and is one of the longest-serving sports anchors in the country.

Sports reporter Geno Perez, who joined KAVU last October, will take over as KAVU’s sports director in early August.
