KGO anchor-reporter Dion Lim was getting burnt out.
She says between the demands of reporting on murders and fires daily and the expectation to keep up with social media, it got to be a little too much.
Then the novel coronavirus began to spread, and all eyes were on China, where COVID-19 originated. As fear of the virus grew, some people in the U.S. began to target Asian-Americans.
“After a series of attacks on the Asian-American community followed by an increase in xenophobia and discrimination toward the Chinese, I knew it was time to speak out,” said Lim, who wrote an op-ed piece for the San Fransisco Chronicle and said those actions ignited her drive and passion for journalism that she hadn’t felt in years.
“Instead of feeling burned out by the state of news, novel coronavirus gave me a purpose. To represent the Asian community and minorities of all kinds so you can feel empowered to use your voice too.”
