Ryan Dean is joining WSYR in Syracuse, N.Y. as co-anchor of the morning newscast.

Dean will join Nicole Sommavilla and meteorologist Kate Thornton weekday mornings from 4:30 to 7 a.m. starting Monday, March 21. He takes over for Dan Cummings, who retired from the ABC affiliate in December.

“We are very excited to have Ryan join the NewsChannel 9 family,” said WSYR vp and general manager Bill Evans. “Ryan brings years of journalistic experience to our team—and we know Central New Yorkers will enjoy waking up with Ryan, Nicole and Kate.”

This is a return to the area for Dean, who worked at Spectrum New in Syracuse before working at KSDK in St. Louis as an anchor and reporter for 14 years.

“Like so many Central New Yorkers, NewsChannel 9 was my station growing up. It’s a station with an amazing legacy, rooted in impactful journalism and great storytelling,” said Dean, “I’m thrilled to return home to join this team and tell meaningful stories about this wonderful community. I can’t wait to get started.”
