Man Who Hurled Epithets at Charlotte Reporter Dies

Brian Eybers, the man who hurled racial epithets at WBTV reporter Steve Crump in an incident in October, was found dead over the weekend in a Charleston, South Carolina hospital.

Eybers, who was 22, later apologized for his confrontation with Crump, a civil rights historian who was on assignment for the CBS affiliate when Eybers began shouting at him, calling him the N-word. The entire incident was captured on video by a WBTV photographer.

The Charlotte Observer reports Eybers died Sunday at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, but the cause of death has not been determined. Eybers had been ordered into a substance abuse treatment program after the incident with Crump.

“This is an unfortunate outcome,” Crump said Monday. “Everyone was hoping this young man would get some help and turn things around.”
