Inaugural Broadcast & Cable Awards Showcase Local News Stars

By Stephanie Tsoflias Siegel

To highlight some of the great work local newsers are doing across the country, Broadcasting & Cable magazine debuted the first annual B&C Awards. And the winners are in.

Anchors at two Tegna stations received the best anchor awards. WUSA main anchor Lesli Foster took home best anchor in a major market, and WGRZ’s Most Buffalo anchor Kate Welshofer took home best anchor in a small to midsize market.

WUSA also won for best late news coverage in a major market and for best investigative reporting in a major market for its reporting on the U.S. Park Police’s use of tear gas on protestors.

ABC-owned stations also did well, receiving an award for Localish, a program that airs across its local station websites, and for its project Without Warning, focused on safety conditions in public housing facilities in the Philadelphia area, which won best investigative reporting from a major market station group.

The awards were created to shine light on the amazing work stations are doing through the pandemic and amid nationwide protests.

“We created this program to enable TV programmers, including local stations and groups, to submit examples of their great work during this difficult time for recognition in the pages of Broadcasting & Cable and to be shared with their peers,” the publication said of the awards, which were determined after newsrooms submitted work for consideration.
