Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame to Induct African-American

Hattie Leeper has been added to the inaugural class of the Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame.

Her inclusion comes after the Hall came under fire for initially having no people of color in its first class.

“During the past week, we’ve had honest and considerate conversations with concerned community members and we’ve heard their voices,” said Amy Burkett, gm of PBS station WTVI and a member of the committee. “Those discussions culminated in a heartfelt, constructive and productive meeting with several local media leaders.”

Last week, Burkett said, “The Charlotte Broadcast Hall of Fame made an unintentional misstep and an error of omission in selecting the inaugural group of inductees – and for that we’re deeply sorry.”

The inaugural class will be inducted on August 21 at Noon.

Burkett added, “”Moving forward, we will revamp the inductee selection process to ensure that it is more inclusive of Charlotte’s full broadcasting history and legacy.”
