Why So Angry? NBC News, Esquire Create ‘Rage Survey’

By Mark Joyella

If voters in this unusual election year have made anything clear, it’s that many are quite angry with politics–and campaigns–as usual. As 2016 begins, NBC reports nearly half of Americans are angry, and no groups are angrier than whites and Republicans.

The statistics come from an NBC News-Esquire Magazine poll aimed at exploring the roots of the rage that has fueled outsider campaigns and grassroots movements–they dubbed it the “rage survey.”

“We wanted to understand where the anger originates that is fueling the extreme nature of our presidential politics, as well as a new era of protest,” said David Granger, Esquire’s editor in chief. “This survey is a way to get at the heart of some of the biggest issues of our time, including injustice, inequality, marginalization and disenfranchisement. Surprisingly, some of the people with the biggest grudges are people who are, in a material sense, the best off.”
