Good Morning America has tapped Sam Champion as a fill-in for chief meteorologist Ginger Zee, who is off on maternity leave following the birth of her first child, a son.
Champion spent seven years at GMA before leaving for The Weather Channel. He returns to GMA next week.
Since leaving GMA, Champion has made morning show appearances on each of the highly competitive morning shows, including CBS This Morning and GMA’s arch rival, NBC’s Today.
Last October, The Weather Channel moved Champion off the morning show, AMHQ, to an undefined role in prime time amid major programming changes at the network.

For the remaining six weeks or so of Zee’s leave, ABC senior meteorologist Rob Marciano will fill in on GMA.
