Week of July 18 Morning Show Ratings: Good Morning America No. 1 in Total Viewers and A25-54 For The Second Week

By Mark Mwachiro

ABC’s Good Morning America has continued its run as the No. 1 one morning news show in total viewers and adults 25-54 continued for a second week.

For the week of July 18, GMA averaged 3.056 million total viewers and 641 000 viewers in the adults 25-54 demo, according to live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen. In total viewers, GMA grew by 6%, and in adults 25-54, it grew by 2% compared to last week. The news got even better for the morning show, which was the only one to grow week-to-week in those two categories.

However, compared to the same week in 2021, GMA is down 2% in total viewers and an eye-popping 21% in adults 25-54.

That erosion of adults 25-54 viewers is a worrying trend, and it will be interesting to see what GMA is going to do about it. NBC’s Today is branching out to digital magazines in search of younger audiences. Will GMA make a similar move?

Speaking of the Today show, its ratings news wasn’t terrible. It lost total viewers by less than 1% and grew by 0.5% in the adults 25-54 demo compared to last week. For the week of July 18, Today had 2.662 million total viewers and 613,000 adults 25-54 viewers.

Unfortunately, when compared to the same week in 2021, the news was not as welcoming: Today lost 14% of total viewers and 15% in the adults 25-54 demo.

As mentioned earlier, this noticeable viewer erosion is one reason Today is launching additional products to lure younger audiences.

CBS Mornings also got a mixed bag of ratings news. During the week of July 18, it had 2.308 million total viewers and 453,000 adults 25-54 viewers. It grew by almost 3% in total viewers and lost 3% in the adults 25-54 demo when compared to the previous week.

The viewer erosion trend continues on CBS Mornings, though not as drastic as ABC’s and NBC’s, compared to the same week in 2021. The morning show lost 5% in total viewers and 2% in the adults 25-54 demo.

The revamped morning show is nearing its first anniversary, and it seems to be attracting more viewers as it prods along, particularly in the female demo.
