Netflix Boss on Evening Newscasts: ‘Don’t… Invest in Things That Are Dying’

By Mark Joyella

Netflix chief Reed Hastings would advise you to forget about the network evening news. Asked at a conference about Netflix perhaps adding news to its mix of programming, Hastings said “the 6 p.m. newscast: that thing’s going away.”

The New York Post notes that Hastings was asked later if his “6 p.m. newscast” comment referred to network broadcasts or local newscasts, and a company spokesperson said, essentially, both–any newscast that’s on at a fixed time is a goner.

Hastings said there’s no reason for Netflix to get involved in any form of regular scheduled newscast: “You don’t want to invest in things that are dying.”
