Jon Stewart Tells 9/11 First Responders: ‘I’m Embarrassed for Our Country’

By Mark Joyella

Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, speaking to a group of 9/11 first responders on Capitol Hill Wednesday morning, said he was “embarrassed for our country” because of how the firefighters and police officers had been treated.

Stewart joined a group of 100 first responders who will go before Congress urging lawmakers to extend funding for those who became sick while working at ground zero after 9/11. As Stewart told them, “I’m embarrassed that you, after serving so selflessly, with such heroism, have to come down here and convince people to do what’s right…nobody had to lobby you to rush to those towers on that day.”

Writing at CNN.com, Dean Obeidallah says he doubts Stewart’s appearance in Washington will be his last as the nation prepares to choose a president. “I think we will see Stewart in the media during the 2016 presidential race commenting on the aspects of the race and issues he feels passionately must be addressed.”
