In our humble opinion (which, as you probably know by now, you don’t read much of), the house fire coverage was due to one simple fact: a great picture. That’s why all three networks were covering the story at the same time Friday morning. Was it a big story? No, unless it was your home. And that’s why the nets moved away from it rather quickly. Is a high speed police pursuit, news? Not usually. But with live pictures most viewers won’t turn away until its over. And the networks know it…
Secondly, on the Mitchell story. Whatever “inside 30 Rock…bickering” is going on, doesn’t change the fact that Mitchell could pick up the phone and book any newsmaker if she wanted to. There are very few people who can do that. Giving her an hour in the middle of the day, during one of the most closely-watched, historic and contentious elections of our lifetimes, can’t hurt. Like Mitchell’s first go-round with a daily MSNBC show (during the 2000 election, which, full disclosure, yours truly produced) this 1pmET slot is only expected to last through the election.
