Former CNN Jerusalem correspondent Jerrold Kessel has lost his battle with cancer. He was 65. A native South African who emigrated to Israel at age 17, Kessel worked for more than two decades in both radio and print, including several years at The Jerusalem Post.

Kessel joined CNN in 1990 as a field producer, eventually becoming a correspondent and deputy bureau chief.

After leaving the network in 2003, Kessel continued with his writing. In fact, a column he wrote for Haaretz was published in today’s paper. He also co-authored last year’s “Goals from Galilee“.

“He was a passionate journalist and a guiding force for many he worked with,” says CNN Jerusalem Bureau Chief Kevin Flower.

Kessel is survived by his wife Lorraine, a son, and his grandchildren.
