Evening News Ratings: Week of April 22

By A.J. Katz

For the second consecutive week, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir finished No. 1 among the evening newscasts across all relevant categories, and posted year-over-year total audience growth as well. That’s based on live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen.

In addition to winning the key demo for the second consecutive week, ABC’s evening newscast has now won 30 of the past 31 weeks of the broadcast season to-date in total viewers.

However, there is a bit of a catch here: ABC World News Tonight was only rated 3 nights last week, Mon-Wed. NBC Nightly News, on the other hand, was rated for all 5 nights. ABC presented live coverage of the 2019 NFL Draft on Thursday and Friday evenings, with TV newser Robin Roberts co-hosting the network’s coverage.

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt –despite finishing No. 2 across the board for back to back weeks– remains the most-watched evening newscast among adults 25-54 for the season to-date, and No. 1 in the demo for the month of April, expanding its A25-54 advantage over ABC by +12,000 vs. April 2018.

Versus the comparable week in 2018 , ABC was +2% in total viewers, NBC was flat in total viewers, while the CBS Evening News with Jeff Glor was 5%. In the A25-54 demo, ABC was -1%, NBC -7% and CBS -9% vs. the comparable week last year.
