Dan Departs: Hume Says “He May Be Valuable, But He’s A Hot Potato”

Brit Hume has known Dan Rather for more than 30 years. “I’ve always found [him] to be gentle, extraordinarly courteous, always very kind to me when I was a young reporter,” Hume said on FNC this afternoon. “It’s kind of sad to see him go out like this.”

Hume said “what everyone will remember at the end about Dan Rather…is a bad story. It was one that he didn’t really respond to effectively, and he put himself in an indefensible position, from which he really has not been able to recover.”

Hume said “I suspect he’ll be able to find work, and he seems determined to go on.” But he noted: “He may be valuable, but he’s a hot potato.” Brent Bozell was Martha MacCallum‘s next guest…
