“Critics — and many inside CBS — grumble that Evening News has sacrificed hard news for soft features. Without saying as much, Kaplan, a self-described ‘hard news guy,’ indicated that he planned to make the broadcast more traditionally hard-news-oriented. ‘These are very serious times,’ he said. ‘People need serious information. It’s a more complicated world. There’s a need for clarity and credibility… It’s up to us to present news of the day in a way that viewers can assimilate, understand, and be satisfied by.’ |
