Baier’s son was born June 29, 2007, and the article describes the tense first two days after doctors, “discovered a potentially fatal heart defect.”
Heart surgery was required, and took place two weeks after Paul was born. “There was a chance he could react to the anesthesia, he could bleed too much or the fix to the heart wouldn’t take,” Baier said. “I remember sitting in the waiting room. We were holding our breath.”

Paul recovered well and Bret is about to reach Father’s Day #1. “I think about that father who gave my son the aorta so my son could live,” said Baier. “That’s pretty heavy on Father’s Day.”
