Allen Pizzey, who has spent more than three decades at CBS News, is leaving the network, TVNewser has learned.

Pizzey, based in Rome, is CBS’s point man at the Vatican, but he also covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Twenty-six years ago today he was in Germany covering the fall of the Berlin Wall. This week, Pizzey finds himself in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt reporting on the crash of that Russian passenger jet. He’s been with CBS since 1980.

Before Rome, Pizzey worked out of the CBS News bureaus in Athens, Greece (1982-89) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1980-82).

Pizzey has won two Emmy Awards for his reporting including for his coverage of the U.S. Marine barracks bombing in Beirut in 1983. He’s also been honored for conflict coverage in Kosovo, Lebanon and the Persian Gulf. He was one of the first journalists to report from Baghdad after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.

Pizzey’s departure comes two months after another CBS foreign correspondent, Clarissa Ward, left the network.

Pizzey will remain with CBS until March.
