The 2008 National Headliner Awards have been announced, and CNN leads the pack with 13 wins. NBC/CNBC follows with 12. HDNet earned two nods, sharing one win with PBS’ NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.
Headliners are issued by the Press Club of Atlantic City. According to its website, the “Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry.”
Numerous awards are issued in the Broadcast Television Networks, Cable Networks and Syndicators division, with first, second, and third place honorees for each category. Some of the first-place winners include:
• Best Newscast: NBC Nightly News, “VA Tech Shootings”
• Coverage of a Major News Event: CNN, “Special Investigations Unit: Death Squads”
• Documentary or Series of Reports: HDNet, “The Forgotten Front: Terrorism in the Phillipines”
• News Magazine Program: “Uganda’s Silent War”, airing jointly on PBS’ NewsHour and HDNet’s World Report
• Business/Consumer Reporting: CNBC, “Mike on America”
• Environmental Reporting: CNN, “Planet in Peril”
