Twitter to offer local advertising next year

By Cory Bergman

You likely already know about Twitter’s promoted tweets, promoted trends and promoted accounts. But now they’re about to get a lot more local. From a NYTimes.com story today about Twitter’s push into the advertising world:

(CEO Dick Costolo) said that next year Twitter would offer a self-serve tool for local businesses to buy Twitter ads, and is working on ways to deliver those ads based on location. It will use Internet addresses, location information that users share and clues like whether someone follows a bunch of restaurants in a particular city.

Yet another local advertising product in an increasingly crowded marketplace. But given Twitter’s tremendous reach — and the fact many local businesses already use it — the social network could soon become a high-priority stop for local advertisers.
