Patch responds to complaints, employee criticism

By Steve Safran

Patch is finding out just how difficult it can be to be a journalism startup. Employees have been complaining about work conditions and there has been criticism that the company is little more than a “content farm.” In Business Insider, the company’s communications director answers some of those charges. There is a long list of complaints and answers, but chief among the ongoing complaints from employees is that they’re worked too hard and paid too little. Answers Patch:

“We’re a start-up, with start-up hours and start-up enthusiasm. We want Patch employees to be happy and set out from day one to accomplish that. From the beginning, we’ve had a great deal of communication with our employees — it’s an open dialogue.”

Indeed, the company is a startup and with that often comes long hours. But Patch should also understand they are working with experienced journalists and that requires a deft touch.
