Netflix Cancels First Kill After One Season

Looks like Juliette’s first kill will be her last.

Netflix canceled the YA vampire romance series First Kill after one season. The series apparently did not have the enduring appeal of the majority of Netflix blockbusters and reportedly did not reach expectations for viewership and episode completion, according to Deadline.

The news comes two months after the show’s first season dropped on the streamer.

The show premiered to mixed reviews back in June, though it made Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for English-language TV shows inside the first three days and surpassed 100 million viewing minutes in its first month. In its first full week of release, the series peaked at No. 3, only behind Stranger Things 4 and Peaky Blinders Season 6.

Based on the short story from V.E. Schwab, the show centered on the Romeo and Juliet-like romance of teens Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Calliope (Imani Lewis). In the series, it’s time for Juliette, a teenage vampire, to complete her first kill so she can join her powerful family of Legacy vampires. But when Juliette develops feelings for Calliope, a newcomer to the area, she is shocked to learn that Calliope is actually a monster hunter from The Guardian Guild. Both discover that the other will not be as simple to kill and, regrettably, far too simple to fall for.

Whatever the reason for the cancellation, the series’ dedicated fan following has been instantly vocal. #CancelNetflix began trending on Twitter, with fans expressing frustration over a recent slew of cancellations of series starring LGBTQ+ characters. Prime Video also axed The Wilds  last week, another YA series that put a lesbian relationship front and center.
