HBO and HBO Max Overtake Netflix for Emmy Wins

In a reverse from last year, HBO and HBO Max beat out Netflix in this year’s overall Emmys tally.

After two nights of the Creative Arts Emmys, HBO/HBO Max and Netflix were neck and neck heading into this year’s Primetime Emmys, but the distance between the two competitors only grew during the ceremony as HBO and HBO Max overcame Netflix, winning a total of 38 Emmys to Netflix’s 26.

Last year, Netflix took home 44 Emmys, more than double HBO and HBO Max’s 19.

Numerous wins for The White Lotus, Succession and Euphoria, as well as significant pickups for programs like Hacks and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, helped HBO and HBO Max succeed. In contrast, despite major victories for Squid Game and Ozark, Netflix was not able to maintain its momentum.

HBO and HBO Max’s win over Netflix was certainly helped by the former receiving an outstanding 140 total nominations compared to the latter’s 105 nominations.

Hulu finished third with ten wins, followed closely by Apple TV+ and Disney+, each with nine wins. Prime Video trailed with seven wins.

On the series side, HBO’s The White Lotus won the most Emmys, snatching up ten total. HBO’s Euphoria and Netflix’s Squid Game each won six, with Netflix’s Stranger Things on their heels with five wins. HBO’s Succession and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso were next with four wins, followed by HBO’s Barry, Hacks and Last Night Tonight with John Oliver, Prime Video’s Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls, Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum U.S and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building with three wins for all the series.
