Ted Lasso, Succession Repeat Emmy Wins as Squid Game's Lee Jung-jae Makes History

The Kenan Thompson-hosted 74th Emmy Awards may have been pushed to Monday on NBC and Peacock because of Sunday Night Football, but it was business as usual when it came to the night's biggest winners. HBO's Succession and Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso once again took home the top awards at the annual ceremony, winning Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series, respectively. Both shows were repeat winners and heavy favorites. Ted Lasso won the award for the second consecutive year, while Succession previously earned the honor during its last year of Emmy eligibility, in 2020, with Netflix's The Crown winning last year. HBO/HBO Max, which had received 140 Emmys nominations—the most of any outlet—also lead the pack among actual winners, with 38 combined Emmys. Netflix, which had 105 nominations, was also second among outlets with 26 Emmy wins, including a historic victory for Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae. 2022’s Top Emmy Nominees and Where to Stream Them The White Lotus was the big winner for HBO/HBO Max. The series took home 10 Emmys from 20 nominations, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, acting awards for Bartlett and Jennifer Coolidge and writing and directing awards for show creator Mike White. Euphoria and Succession also earned multiple awards for the company. In addition to its Oustanding Drama win, Succession received accolades for Matthew Macfadyen as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Jesse Armstrong for directing. Meanwhile, Euphoria received six Emmys, including a win for Zendaya as Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Fan favorite shows Hulu's Only Murders in the Building and Apple TV's Severance came up short on the major categories, but both took home multiple awards. Only Murders in the Building got three Emmys when all was said and done, and Severance earned two. But not everything was predictable. Following Thompson kicking off the ceremony with an elaborate dance number to classic TV themes, the show started with two first-time Emmy winners. Michael Keaton won for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his work in Dopesick and Murray Bartlett took home an award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for The White Lotus. It was a sign of new things to come. History in the making Lee Jung-jae made his mark on the night, taking home the prize for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Squid Game, becoming the first Asian actor to win the award and the fourth actor of Asian descent to take home an acting Emmy. And in Squid Game's first award of the night, director Hwang Dong-hyuk won Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series. He was the first Asian and first South Korean to take home the award. Squid Game, Netflix's most-watched series ever, took home six Emmys overall, and Hwang Dong-hyuk even teased he'd be back with Season 2. And though it was a streaming-heavy show, broadcast wasn't totally shut out. Heading into Monday night's ceremony, Quinta Brunson had already made Emmy history, becoming the first Black woman nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year with her breakout ABC series Abbott Elementary. Brunson took home the writing award on the night, and her Abbott Elementary co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph received a trophy of her own. Ralph won for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming the second Black winner in the history of the category. The actor stole the show during her speech, singing Endangered Species by Dianne Reeves and adding, “To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like." At the end of the night, HBO/HBO Max took home a combined 38 wins, Netflix earned 26, Hulu had 10, Apple TV+ and Disney+ each had 9 and Amazon earned 7.
